AS 1428.1

Design for Access and Mobility

Sets accessibility requirements for pathways, ramps, handrails, tactile indicators and circulation spaces. Mandatory for any building requiring DDA compliance.

AS/NZS 4586

Slip Resistance Classification

P-rating system for pedestrian surfaces — P5 is the highest. Wet zones and ramps must meet specified P-ratings to satisfy duty-of-care requirements.

AS 1657

Fixed Platforms, Walkways, Stairways and Ladders

Industrial walkway, handrail height and edge protection requirements for elevated or guarded pedestrian routes.

What's a TGSI and where is it required?

Tactile Ground Surface Indicator — the bumpy or barred panels at stair tops, ramp transitions and pedestrian crossing points. Required where AS 1428 applies, which is most commercial and public buildings.

What slip rating do I need for my surface?

Indoor dry: P3 minimum. Indoor wet (bathrooms, kitchens): P4. Outdoor or ramp: P4–P5. We test the existing surface and specify what's needed.

Can you install pedestrian barriers in an active warehouse?

Yes — we stage installs to keep forklift routes clear, work after shift, and use temporary signage during the process. Most warehouse installs are completed across 1–2 nights.

Do your handrails meet AS 1428?

Yes — 865–1000mm height, 30–50mm grip diameter, 50mm clearance from any wall, no sharp returns. Galvanised steel powder-coated to any colour.

What are anti-slip stair nosings made of?

Aluminium extrusion with carborundum or rubber insert. The insert is replaceable when worn — usually every 5–8 years. Available in hi-vis yellow, black, or anodised finishes.

Is DDA compliance our responsibility or yours?

Both. The building owner is responsible for overall compliance, but as the installer we ensure our work meets the standards we're contracted to deliver. The compliance handover pack documents this.
